Mitchelton Winery & Hotel, Nagambie

Accessible Weekend Away

One of my favourite places for a weekend away, just 90 minutes from Melbourne, is Mitchelton Winery & Hotel in Nagambie.

It’s somewhere I recommend time and time again because once you arrive, you really don’t need to leave. Beautiful accommodation, a winery, good food, gorgeous grounds and a pool? Pretty much my idea of heaven.

I’ve stayed at Mitchelton a few times now, and it’s one of those places I keep coming back to because there’s a lot about the accessibility that works really well for me. Is it perfect? No. There are a couple of things I’d love to see improved, but overall it makes for a pretty easy weekend away.

As always, I’ll give you the details so you can decide if it works for you.

Arrival & Parking

There’s accessible parking on site, with lift access from the car park up to reception.

Once inside, the hotel has a spacious foyer, wide hallways and plenty of room to manoeuvre with a mobility aid. I found getting around the hotel itself really easy.

The Accessible Room

I stayed in an accessible Deluxe Room, which can be configured with either king or twin bedding.

The room is spacious with plenty of room to manoeuvre around the bed and move around with a mobility aid. There’s also a light switch and power point beside the bed, which is one of those little details that can make a big difference.

And then there’s the view.

The room has a balcony overlooking the pool and surrounding grounds, but there is a small step out to it. For me, that was enough to stop me accessing the balcony independently.

Small steps like this are something I come across surprisingly often in accessible hotel rooms. I didn’t ask whether a portable ramp was available because I wasn’t spending much time in the room, but it could make such a difference. I’d love to see a portable ramp offered at check-in for accessible rooms, so guests know the option is there without having to ask.

Accessible Bathroom

The accessible bathroom is spacious and worked really well for me.

There’s a roll-under sink, drop-down shower seat and grab rails around the shower and toilet, with plenty of room to manoeuvre.

I also appreciated that the toiletries weren’t fixed to the shower wall. It’s a small detail, but it meant I could move them somewhere that was actually within reach for me.

Pool Access

The pool is definitely one of the highlights at Mitchelton, particularly on a sunny afternoon.

Getting around the pool area itself is easy, with step-free access to the sunlounges and surrounding grass.

Getting into the pool is a little trickier. There’s no pool hoist or handrails to assist with entry and exit. There is a shallow entry, but getting in and out is difficult without anything to hold onto.

Thankfully, lounging beside the pool is pretty good too. There’s poolside food and drink service, so once I was settled with a book, there really wasn’t much reason to move!

Food, Wine & Things to Do

This is probably my favourite thing about staying at Mitchelton. Once you check in, you can quite happily stay put for the weekend.

Provedore Cafe is there for breakfast and lunch, while Muse Restaurant is an option for dinner. Hotel guests can also enjoy a complimentary tasting at the cellar door, which feels pretty essential when you’re staying at a winery!

There’s also the Gallery of Aboriginal Art, pickleball courts and beautiful grounds along the Goulburn River, with plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the surroundings.

One thing to know before your stay is that the day spa is not wheelchair accessible.

Exploring Nagambie

If you do want to venture out, Nagambie town centre is only around 10 minutes away.

On this trip I stopped at Nagambie Brewery & Distillery, right on Lake Nagambie. I found it easy to access, with accessible parking out the front, step-free indoor and outdoor areas and an accessible toilet.

It’s a great spot to add to a Nagambie weekend, especially if you can grab a table overlooking the lake. And yes, the gin was pretty great too!

The Verdict

There’s a reason I keep coming back to Mitchelton.

For me, it has that perfect weekend away feeling without being too far from Melbourne. I can arrive, slow down and enjoy good food, wine, the pool and beautiful surroundings without needing to plan much else.

There are a few access limitations worth knowing about, particularly the step onto the balcony, the lack of accessible pool entry and the inaccessible day spa. But there’s also a lot that works really well for me, from the spacious room and bathroom to how easy it is to get around the property.

And that’s exactly why I share the details. Accessibility is personal, and what works for me might not work for you. Hopefully, this gives you the information you need to decide whether Mitchelton could work for your next weekend away.

If you’re looking for some R+R, good food, wine and a beautiful place to switch off, Mitchelton remains one of my favourite accessible weekend escapes from Melbourne.
