Assembly Ground. Essendon
Accessible Cafe Review
104 Fletcher Street,
Essendon VIC 3040
Corner cafe serving breakfast + lunch
Not every accessible cafe is going to be your perfect fit, and that’s okay.
Sometimes a space works brilliantly for one person and feels a little trickier for someone else. That’s exactly why I like to show you the layout and share the details, so you can decide if it’ll work for you.
Case in point: Assembly Ground in Essendon. The access wasn’t bad at all, I’ve just had easier experiences elsewhere, particularly as someone who prefers a little more space when using my mobility scooter.
Located on the corner of Fletcher and Napier Streets, Assembly Ground is a popular neighbourhood cafe with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and, most importantly, some great food!
Getting into Assembly Ground
The main entrance on Napier Street has a flight of stairs, so this isn’t the accessible way into the cafe.
Instead, step-free access is via the courtyard entrance on Fletcher Street.
This entrance wasn’t signposted when I visited, and there were a few things partially blocking the way, so I needed a little manoeuvring to get through. The staff were happy to help, though, and once through the courtyard I could enter the cafe without encountering any steps.
Space + Seating
The accessible entrance brings you into a smaller dining room at the back. From here, you need to make your way through to the main cafe and front counter.
It’s fairly narrow in parts, and a couple of people needed to move their chairs so I could get my scooter through. It was manageable, but I personally prefer having a little more space to move around.
There are standard-height tables and chairs throughout, and I found a suitable table near the front counter.
The smaller room at the back could also work well for wheelchair users, although there isn’t much room to leave larger mobility aids or prams tableside. If I visited again, I’d probably bring my manual chair rather than my scooter.
There’s also plenty of outdoor seating, which would probably be my pick on a warmer day as there’s more room to spread out.
Accessible Toilet
The accessible toilet is at the back of the cafe, close to the Fletcher Street courtyard entrance.
It has an automatic door which is always a bonus! The toilet itself is on the smaller side, but it worked well for me.
I used it on my way out, which made things nice and easy as it’s right near the step-free exit.
Accessible Parking
There are accessible parking spaces nearby on both Fletcher Street and Napier Street, as well as regular street parking throughout the surrounding area.
If you’re using the step-free entrance, parking on or near Fletcher Street may make getting into the cafe a little more straightforward.
And the Food?
The food was definitely a highlight of my visit.
I love a good superfood salad when I’m out for brunch or lunch, and Assembly Ground’s version was right up my alley. Fresh, filling and exactly the kind of café meal I tend to choose.
My Overall Experience
Assembly Ground ticks plenty of accessibility boxes: step-free access, suitable seating, an accessible toilet and accessible parking nearby.
For me, the layout just felt a little tighter than I prefer. Next time I’d bring my manual chair or grab a table outside where there’s more space.
Accessibility isn’t about giving venues a pass or fail. A setup that feels tight for me might work brilliantly for someone else, which is why I think seeing the space and knowing what to expect before you arrive is so important.
