Mr Baxter. West Footscray

Accessible cafe review

1/1 Ormond Road,

West Footscray VIC 3012

Cafe serving bagels, sandwiches + coffee

There’s a new bagel spot on Melbourne’s west side, and this one is well worth knowing about.

Mr Baxter has recently opened in West Footscray, serving up bagels, sandwiches, coffee and matcha in a bright, spacious corner café. And even better? The accessibility works really well.

Located on the corner of Ormond Road and the Geelong Road service road, Mr Baxter has a relaxed neighbourhood feel with plenty of space inside… and yes, gluten-free bagels are on the menu too!

Getting in

The entrance is wide, step-free and easy to navigate with a wheelchair or mobility scooter.

Once inside, the cafe is surprisingly spacious. When I visited there were multiple prams inside and still plenty of room to move around comfortably on my mobility scooter.

Space & seating

There are a few different areas to choose from depending on what works best for you.

Most of the seating is at standard-height tables and chairs, with window side bench seating, a large communal table and some more relaxed lounge style seating.

There are also tables out the front, which will be a great option once Melbourne decides to give us some warmer weather!

Accessible toilet

The accessible toilet was one of the biggest surprises.

For a cafe of this size, it’s huge! There’s plenty of room to manoeuvre, suitable grab rails and it was spotlessly clean when I visited.

Accessible parking

I didn’t find any designated accessible parking bays in the immediate area.

Mr Baxter is in a fairly residential, local pocket of West Footscray though, with street parking available throughout the surrounding streets. Depending on when you visit, you should be able to find a suitable street park nearby.

The verdict

There’s nothing I love more than finding a new spot where the accessibility just works.

Mr Baxter is bright, spacious, easy to get into and has a genuinely roomy accessible toilet - all things that make a cafe visit that little bit easier.

And the bagels? Definitely worth the trip west. Even better, they have gluten-free ones too! 🥯☕
