Johnny’s Green Room. Carlton
Accessibility Review
Level 2/293-297 Lygon Street,
Carlton VIC 3053
Tuscan inspired terrace + open air rooftop!
I was blessed with some glorious Melbourne sunshine for my visit to Johnny’s Green Room, an accessible rooftop bar and restaurant in Carlton, perfect timing for a rooftop lunch!
Sitting on top of the old King & Godfree building in Carlton, Johnny’s Green Room has sweeping views across Melbourne and a relaxed, Tuscan inspired feel. There’s a mix of covered and open air space too, which is always handy with Melbourne weather.
Getting in
Johnny’s Green Room is accessed via a laneway off Lygon Street.
The laneway itself is step-free and there’s a small lift that takes you up to the rooftop. I used it with my mobility scooter without any issues, although it is on the smaller side.
Space & seating
The rooftop is actually quite spacious, with a mix of indoor, covered and open air areas.
There are different seating options throughout, including standard-height tables and chairs with backrests. I was able to park my scooter alongside our table with enough room around me.
I visited for lunch and it was fairly relaxed, although I’ve heard it can get much busier on weekends, so booking ahead may be worthwhile if you need a particular table or some extra space.
Accessible toilet
This is probably the main thing to know before visiting.
There’s an ambulant toilet alongside the main toilets on the rooftop, but the accessible toilet is located downstairs on Level 1.
Staff need to take you down to access it. It’s not my favourite setup. I’d much prefer the accessible toilet to be available independently on the same level, but there is an accessible option available.
Accessible parking
There are a few accessible parking spaces on Faraday Street, a short distance from Johnny’s Green Room.
I've included a parking map below to make them a little easier to find.
Food & vibes
Johnny’s Green Room is a great option if you’re looking for a Melbourne rooftop for pizza, drinks and city views.
And I have to give a special mention to the gluten-free pizza because it was genuinely one of the highlights, I'm still thinking about it!
Melbourne sunshine, rooftop views, lift access and gluten-free pizza? Rooftop season might just be year round after all.
