This corner cafe on Swanston Street has had a glow-up! Now operated by @brunettioro1956 you’ll find the classic cakes and coffee Melbournians know and love, all in a fresh, open-air setting. Let me tell you what to expect, access wise.
Located next to the Town Hall, the cafe sits right on the corner of Swanston and Little Collins Street. There are steps at the main entrance, but if you head around the back down Rainbow Place, you’ll find the step-free entrance. The automated door needs to be opened by staff (luckily I had someone with me to go in and ask for assistance).
Smaller than most Brunetti’s, the space inside is a little tight - especially if you’re using a mobility aid or have a pram. There’s a communal table in the middle with low stools, tables overlooking Swanston Street, plus a narrow side setup with more seating. You’ll also find some scattered high tables and bar stools.
As always, the Brunetti dessert cabinets are a highlight - filled with beautiful pastries, cakes, and focaccias. Order and pay at the counter, they bring the food to you, but you need to wait and collect your coffee, so it can feel a little squashy when busy.
There’s an accessible toilet downstairs towards the back door. A staff-operated lift provides access, which means it’s not ideal for independent use, but once downstairs, the toilet itself is large, with suitable rails and a backrest.
To exit, you’ll again need staff assistance to open the automated back door.
There are four accessible parking spots on Russell Street, one block away. There are two more spots directly out front on Little Collins but were out of action when I visited due to construction.
It’s a buzzy city classic that soaks up Melbourne’s atmosphere. If you’re a Brunetti fan like me, it’s well worth visiting if you’re in the city - ideally with a friend who can help wave down staff for access when needed!
