All day eatery next to Royal Botanic Gardens

Open 7 days 8am - 4pm

Just off The Tan, Observatory Café is a European-style, all-day eatery and the perfect stop before or after a wander through the Royal Botanic Gardens. I hadn’t been in years and honestly, that one’s on me. It’s so accessible that I’ve already been back again… which pretty much says it all.

You’ll find it via the Observatory Gate of the Gardens. The entrance is easy to spot, with a wide, step-free automated door right next to the Visitor Centre Gift Shop; an immediate independence win, and something I always notice.

Inside, the space is huge and beautifully light-filled, with plenty of room to move comfortably using mobility aids (or wrangle prams). Out the back is a gorgeous courtyard terrace with serious European vibes and those iconic yellow striped umbrellas, while out front there’s loads of seating plus a handy grab and go option if you’re heading straight into the Gardens.

It was busy when I visited, but thanks to the sheer number of tables, I didn’t have to wait and could choose a spot that actually worked for me. Being able to pick your seat and not just take what’s left is something I really value, and it makes such a difference to the whole experience.

Access notes (the good stuff):

  • Step-free, automated entry

  • Spacious indoor and outdoor seating with good circulation space

  • Changing Places facility out the front (MLAK key required)

  • Accessible toilet next door at the Visitor Centre, plus additional accessible toilets throughout the Gardens

  • Multiple accessible parking bays along Birdwood Avenue, with extra street parking nearby

Whether you’re popping in for a quick coffee or settling in for a long lunch with friends or family, Observatory Café is an easy, genuinely accessible choice in a beautiful setting. And while you’re there, take the time to explore the Gardens themselves. They’re wonderfully accessible, and I’m still wondering why it took me so long to come back!
